Hank Pellissier, aka Hank Hyena: writer, non-profit director, producer, activist, performer, teacher — hankpellissier@yahoo.com / Wikipedia
As a journalist, he was the Bay Area’s “Local Intelligence” columnist for the NYTimes.com - plus the “Odd Barking” and “Urban Animal” columnist for SFGate.com, and the “Naked World” columnist for Salon.com. He was Managing Editor and writer for Institute for Ethics & Emerging Technology, a futurist think tank - penning 100+ forecasts. He’s authored 100 articles for GreatSchools.org plus dozens of essays on political and economic topics. He’s published multiple e-books, including his most recent, What Would Peter Kropotkin Say?”
As Hank ‘Hyena’ - he was a critically-praised San Francisco performance artist and a Poetry Slam co-champion, anthologized in The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry. His slide show, “The Anarchist’s Vomit” was presented in Mexico City and Prague. He taught Stand-Up Comedy writing for five years as director of the nonprofit Hyena Comedy Institute. He currently leads “Comic Revolutionary Cabaret” services for the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists.
He’s the founder/director of Humanist Mutual Aid Network, a nonprofit that’s raised over $1,000,000 for secular education and sustainability, primarily in SubSaharan Africa. As an activist, he’s protested with Extinction Rebellion and CodePink, plus he launched the groups RACCOON (Radical Anti-Capitalist Collective of Outrageous Noise), RAT (Radical Autonomous Tribe) and MegaMouth Rebels, and he reports regularly for IndyBay.
The political philosopher he admires most is Peter Kropotkin. He’s teaching a workshop for Bay Anarchist Free School called “What Kind of Anarchist Are You?” and he’s organizing “Anarchy Cabaret” for free infotainment performances that convey anarcho-utopian values.
He also directed SF preschools for five years, and his Master’s thesis was on the “Insect Haiku of Kobayashi Issa.”
